Justin and Savannah Roberts of Chrome Shack show us their 1971 little window Peterbilt built with a Big Cam 400 Cummins, aluminum frame, custom narrow hood, and a look designed to prove one thing: chrome looks good on anything. What started as a simple cleanup project turned into a unique show truck and rolling display for the Chrome Shack. The original 1971 cab paint inspired the entire build, with the hood, fenders, and beverage trailer paint-matched and weathered to look like they’ve always belonged together. The truck was cut down from a tandem to a single axle, finished with a slick black frame, and paired with a practical display trailer that makes setup at truck shows quick and easy. The Chrome Shack is located off Exit 8 on Interstate 81 in Tennessee and has been serving truckers since 1998. At the Shell Rotella SuperRigs show in Bristol, Tennessee, Chris caught up with Chris McKay from Jacobstown, New Jersey, and took a walk around his sharp 1998 Kenworth W900L. This working W900L is powered by a 3406E Caterpillar with a little extra power, backed by a 13-speed and 3.55 gears. Chris says the truck is supposed to be around 700 horsepower, and it has no problem eating up hills while hauling light concert production loads, rock and roll gear, and even large live trees on a step deck. The truck features a Sovereign Blue paint scheme inspired by the classic Apache Kenworth look, a 72-inch studio sleeper, custom lighting, red-white-and-blue underglow, seven-inch exhaust, an Air Ride front end, custom air intake work, and a matching trailer with a unique sun graphic named “Bruce.” Chris also talks about what it’s like hauling major concert tours, including a recent run helping with Journey, where 12 trucks and eight buses kept the show moving from city to city.
